Advent Calendar 2024 | Season's greetings

35 luoghi diversi nella città

This last post is dedicated to Season's Greetings at the end of an important year for the Portici Patrimonio Mondiale Office.

In 2024 many results were reached, among them the placing of 35 plaques within the twelve components of the serial site, whose text, in Italian and English, reads:

The Porticoes of Bologna have been inscribed in 2021 on the World Heritage List of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

The series of Bologna’s porticoes represents in an exemplary manner an architectural typology of ancient origin and wide diffusion, never abandoned until today, but in continuous change through precise historical periods of the town’s transformation. The series was selected in the context of the wider porticoed system that permeates the old historical city.

The property represents a variety of porticoed building typologies which characterize the houses of the working class, the aristocratic residences, the public and religious buildings. Historical and contemporary construction employ a wide range of building materials, technologies and styles, as a result of the progressive city’s expansion and mutations since the 12th century.

The plaques, in size and color, have been designed to be correctly inserted in the context of the historic city, without forgetting the need to be a tangible sign of the Outstanding Universal Value of the Porticoes and at the same time a reminder to devote energy and commitment to transmitting this heritage to future generations.

In order to promote maximum inclusion, a QR code has been printed on the plaques that refers to special contents available to deaf people, as well as a Braille text. In order to improve accessibility for people in wheelchairs, all the plaques were installed at an adequate distance from the ground.

Best wishes to everyone for a fruitful 2025!
