Management

Every property on the UNESCO World Heritage List must have its own Management Plan, an operational tool that guarantees the identification, protection,conservation, enhancement and transmission to future generations of the property.

An effective Management Plan must:

  • effectively maintain the balance between conservation and development;
  • be created, as far as possible, using a participatory approach and be based on a system of governance involving all stakeholders in the territory;
  • be a dynamic instrument capable of planning short, medium and long-term actions;
  • envisage procedures for the monitoring and feedback of the results;
  • identify actions to mitigate the risks and negative impacts affecting the property

In the case of the Porticoes of Bologna, the project started with a cognitive analysis, which focused on the territorial and socio-economic identity and relative stakeholders. The involvement of the population and an assessment of the potential impact of the nomination on the territory are key in this respect.

The Steering Committee

After the registration of the "The Porticoes of Bologna" on the World Heritage List, the World Heritage Portico Office was created within the City Council of Bologna to deal with issues strictly related to the porticoes and their management, valorisation and protection. The office works alongside the Steering Committee, formed by the city's social and economic bodies and forces. These were involved in the nomination phase and in 2019 signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning the definition, implementation, monitoring and updating of the management plan.
The members of the Steering Committee are:

  • Comune di Bologna
