The Evaporitic Karst Properties of Emilia Romagna added to the World Heritage List

The number of Italian properties rises to 59

The World Heritage Committee, which met in Riyadh for its 45th session, resolved to include the “Evaporitic Karst and Caves of Northern Apennines” in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a natural serial property that includes seven components: North Secchia Valley, South Reggio Hills, Gypsum Outcrops of Zola Predosa, Gypsum Outcrops of Bologna, Vein of the Romagna Gypsum Outcrop, Evaporites of San Leo, and the Gypsum Outcrops of Eastern Romagna.

Another precious element of our territory has seen its universal value recognised. The entire complex makes up the first and most widely studied evaporitic karst in the world, with unique geological characteristics, including the world’s deepest gypsum cave and Europe’s most abundant salt water springs.
