PORTICANDO - Three Institutions and One Heritage

An Emilia-Romagna Region project with the Academy of Fine Arts and the Municipality of Bologna

“Porticando - the DNA of the city” is the third edition of Three Institutions and One Heritage, an operating programme supported by the Region. It promotes networks and capitalises resources and knowledge by encouraging experimentation and creativity among young restorers and communicators in the field of cultural heritage. It also stimulates communities’ and schools’ participation in a common path of responsibility towards “our” cultural heritage.

“Porticando - the DNA of the city” comprised a variegated range of activity over five “worksites”, three of which involved restoration of different types of portico-related properties – restoration of unpublished archival and photographic documents; the maintenance of the eighteenth-century drawingsof Pio Panfili preserved at the Archiginnasio; the restoration and removal of graffiti on a portion of theportico with a shrine and fresco of the “Madonna and Child” in Via delle Belle Arti; and the completion of the restoration of thewooden portico of Palazzo Grassi in Via Marsala 12.

The other two were the heritage education Worksite – with schools taking part in graffiti removal educational schemes and the production of an e-book – and the communication Worksite, which produced a video complete with shooting, interviews and editing, and led the creative development for the project’s visual identity and the coordinated communication materials. This part was subject to a public competition open to the city.
