URBANE - Towards zero emissions for last mile deliveries

E-commerce is a growing sector and the number of online purchases is expected to increase further in the coming years. How can the increase in home deliveries in the historic centers of European cities be reconciled with the requirements  of the ecological objectives of the 2030 agenda?

The URBANE project focuses on the "last mile" of deliveries, the final stretch which is direct to the heart of cities and towns, which must be better protected from pollution and traffic congestion.

The strategy envisaged to achieve this goal consists in the implementation of zero-emission shared transport modes, such as electric vans, e-bikes (for light transport) and cargo-bikes.

The URBANE project involves 39 partners from 12 different European countries, including 12 cities, leading companies in logistics-related services, transport operators, associations, networks and foundations in the field of mobility at local, regional and international level..

Bologna's commitment as a city envisages, as indicated in the PULS (Urban Plan for Sustainable Logistics), the setting up of three shared interchange areas serving the historic center, for the transhipment of goods between traditional vehicles and electric or zero-impact vehicles. The experimentation involves a local working group composed of the Sustainable Mobility and Infrastructure Department of the Municipality of Bologna, local companies and logistics technology and service providers, which will be coordinated by ITL, a regional foundation with public participation for transport and logistics.
