Bologna hosts the first local meeting of the TERRAIN project

Bologna, January 30, 2025 – The first meeting of the local Living Lab for the TERRAIN project was held in Bologna. This initiative is part of the Interreg IPA ADRION program. The meeting saw the participation of numerous local stakeholders, who attended the first presentation of the project and later discussed its future perspectives in terms of local actions aimed at promoting innovative solutions for sustainable mobility.

The approach of the TERRAIN Living Lab allows the project to be used as a dynamic and participatory space where actions are identified, implemented, evaluated and improved in collaboration with local actors. The discussions between the various involved parties ensure that urban mobility challenges are addressed in a concrete and inclusive manner, guaranteeing the representation of the diverse needs of the territory. The event involved representatives from the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Metropolitan City of Bologna, TPER, SRM Reti e Mobilità, the Italian Federation for the Environment and Bicycle (FIAB), local primary schools and the Disability Advocacy Council, all of whom will play a crucial role in the implementation and monitoring of the project’s initiatives.

This first meeting was an opportunity to focus the discussion on Bologna’s pilot action, which is fully integrated into the established project "Bologna Moves Sustainably for Schools," aiming to reduce car use near schools by promoting active and independent mobility for children. The meeting also provided an overview of ongoing initiatives, such as the Pedibus program, which encourages walking as a safe and independent mode of transport, contributing to more sustainable mobility. The key role of intermodality and active mobility for the project’s success was emphasized, highlighting how sustainable school mobility is also part of the actions outlined in Bologna’s Climate City Contract. This connection strengthens the relationship between the TERRAIN project and the European Union’s climate neutrality goals, further confirming the importance of international cooperation to improve urban policies.

In parallel, similar meetings were held in other partner cities of the project between December and January, including Ljubljana (Slovenia), Skopje (North Macedonia), Durrës (Albania), Berane (Montenegro), Zagreb (Croatia), Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Pančevo (Serbia), emphasizing the transnational scope of the TERRAIN project and the commitment to building a more sustainable future for all participating cities.

This first meeting will be followed by further opportunities for discussion to develop, test and monitor local experimentation alongside all identified stakeholders.
