Urban Light, Urban Life: Bologna’s Experience within ENLIGHTENme

On January 29, the 46th edition of the Breakfast at Sustainability's series was held at ICLEI’s office in Brussels, a key event for discussing sustainable urban policies in Europe. The event highlighted the role of public lighting in promoting health and well-being, with a particular focus on the findings from the European ENLIGHTENme ENLIGHTENmeproject, funded by the Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.

The meeting provided a platform for experts and institutional representatives to explore how urban policies can integrate health, well-being and inclusivity into city planning processes. Through the experiences of cities like Tartu (Estonia), Amsterdam (Netherlands), and Bologna (Italy), the relationship between urban lighting and quality of life was analyzed, with a focus on the benefits of adopting innovative solutions.

For the City of Bologna, a partner in the ENLIGHTENme project, Marzia Bettocchi (Health and Healthy Cities) and Francesco Mattia Rubini (Public Lighting) shared their experience. Bologna has developed a pilot experiment alongside an innovative approach to studying the effects of public lighting on citizens' health and well-being, helping to provide data for guidelines aimed at improving the integration of urban policies.

This event represented an important opportunity to disseminate acquired knowledge and foster dialogue on future European strategies for urban lighting and health. Thanks to the efforts of the City of Bologna and other ENLIGHTENme partners, the initiative will contribute to developing guidelines and policy briefs for European cities, aiming for a more citizen-centered urban future.
