Bologna has secured third place at the 2024 LUCI Cities & Lighting Awards, an international accolade promoted by the LUCI Association to celebrate the world’s most innovative and sustainable urban lighting projects. This achievement was made possible through a lighting requalification project developed by the I-DEA Luce Architettura studio in collaboration with the Municipality of Bologna, a partner in the Horizon 2020 ENLIGHTENme project.
The project focused on enhancing 40 historically significant monuments, including the iconic Santo Stefano and San Domenico squares, 16 kilometers of porticoes, and the ancient gates of the city walls. This modernization involved the installation of over 3,500 new fixtures and 680 light points, leading to a significant energy savings of 77%. This extensive work improved the safety and welcoming nature of the city’s nighttime landscape while respecting Bologna’s historical and architectural identity, thanks to a thorough analysis of each individual site. The project, funded with €3,017,900 through the “Metropolitan Cities 2014-2020” National Operational Program, was carried out in agreement with the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape.
Founded in 2002, LUCI Association is a nonprofit organization with over 70 member cities and more than 50 members, including companies, design studios, and research institutes. LUCI’s mission is to promote the creative and sustainable use of light to foster the social, cultural, and economic development of cities, enhancing their nighttime livability.
As part of the ENLIGHTENme project, funded by the EU’s Horizon program with €5 million and coordinated by the University of Bologna, the city has explored the impact of indoor and outdoor lighting on human health, with a particular focus on the needs of the elderly population. LUCI in ENLIGHTENme has played a key role in connecting cities, experts, and researchers, facilitating the exchange of experiences and contributing to the development of urban policies aimed at reducing inequalities and improving public health.
The award received by Bologna is a testament to its commitment to promoting sustainable solutions and enhancing quality of life through urban lighting, while celebrating its cultural heritage and supporting community well-being.
