At
the CIVITAS Forum in Parma, on October 3, 2024, Bologna presented its pilot
initiative under the REALLOCATE project, dedicated to road safety and the
promotion of sustainable mobility. Specifically, Chiara Girotti, head of the
Urban Transformations and Cycling unit within the Sustainable Mobility and
Infrastructure Department of the Municipality of Bologna, participated in the
roundtable "Streets for People: The Transformative Power of Active
Mobility." In her presentation, titled "Safe and Sustainable Routes
to School for Walking and Cycling: From Ongoing Experiences to the REALLOCATE
Project," Girotti outlined the city's strategies to encourage safe and
sustainable routes to schools, focusing on pedestrian and cycling mobility.
The panel featured international experts such as Andreas Røhl, Mobility Lead at Gehl; Giacomo Lozzi from the cAIRgo Bike Project; Stefanos Tsigdinos from the Municipality of Penteli; Kosmas Anagnostopoulos, Managing Director of CIVINET Greece-Cyprus; and Katharina Paoli, CEO and founder of Nudgd. Together, they addressed the crucial question: "What strategies are cities adopting to transform streets so that active mobility becomes the primary mode of transport rather than an alternative?"
The session showcased a series of innovative approaches to promote active mobility, encouraging walking, cycling and using wheeled transport. Among the proposed solutions were new infrastructures, cutting-edge services and behavioral incentives, applied across various projects within the CIVITAS community, ranging from metropolitan cities to suburban municipalities, administrative capitals and tourist areas. Through case studies and discussions, the experts delved into strategies that successfully integrate active mobility into the urban fabric, creating safe, accessible and enjoyable spaces for people. During the session, speakers also highlighted the numerous benefits of active mobility, including environmental benefits, public health and social inclusion. They also discussed effective methodologies for measuring, understanding and communicating these impacts to the public, emphasizing the importance of creating a culture of sustainable mobility that can be easily understood and adopted by communities.
Bologna and Parma, the host city of the CIVITAS Forum 2024, are also partners in the European project Let'sGOv, dedicated to renewing the governance of the ecological transition in Italian cities within the Horizon Mission 100 Cities for Climate Neutrality by 2030.
