Kick-off for the TERRAIN Project: Sustainable Urban Mobility Transformation in the Adriatic-Ionian Region

The Municipality of Bologna is set to make further strides towards greener and more sustainable mobility with the TERRAIN project, funded by the Interreg VI-B IPA Adriatic Ionian Cooperation Programme 2021-2027. The project, started on September 1, 2024, and spanning three years, aims to support the transformation of urban mobility in the Adriatic-Ionian Region. Its objectives are to reduce carbon emissions, improve travel efficiency, and modernize transport systems in regional cities by promoting multimodal and low-emission urban mobility. Alongside Bologna, participating cities include Ioannina (Greece), Ljubljana (Slovenia), and Zagreb (Croatia), which will mentor five IPA cities from EU candidate countries: Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Berane (Montenegro), Pančevo (Serbia), Skopje (North Macedonia), and Durrës (Albania).

Bologna's involvement in the TERRAIN project is part of a broader commitment to becoming a greener and more sustainable city. With a funding of 201,555 euros fully covered by ERDF and national funds, Bologna will support concrete actions outlined in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PUMS). The goal is to enhance the promotion of sustainable mobility, contributing to the 2030 Agenda for green transformation. As a mentor city, Bologna will share its expertise in mobility policies, integrated and accessible public transport, and multimodal solutions (MaaS). This will benefit the IPA cities and enable Bologna to further refine its urban mobility approach, serving as a model of best practices for the entire region.

Selected by the European Commission in 2022 as one of the 100 European cities aspiring to climate neutrality by 2030, Bologna's mobility strategy focuses on three main areas: decarbonizing public transport, completing the Biciplan, and promoting the City 30 initiative. These measures aim to reduce accidents, emissions, noise pollution, and road congestion while promoting active mobility and public transport use. Through the TERRAIN project, Bologna will concentrate efforts on promoting the City 30 concept via targeted awareness campaigns and initiatives like involving children and families in experimenting with more sustainable home-to-school travel solutions, such as a bike bus, to demonstrate that safer streets can encourage active mobility and cycling and reduce congestion in school areas.

The TERRAIN project represents a crucial opportunity for Bologna to consolidate its leadership in the transition to sustainable urban mobility and reinforce its commitment to a climate-neutral future. With concrete initiatives and targeted awareness campaigns, Bologna is ready to become a benchmark for sustainable mobility within the Adriatic-Ionian Region.
