European Befana

Every year, on the Epiphany occasion, the “Befana” (elderly character who brings gifts and candies to children) comes to Italy.  Particularly in Bologna comes the “European Befana”, which is an initiative promoted by Europe Direct services of Municipality of Bologna and Emilia-Romagna Region. In addition to gifts for the children, the “Befana” delivers a magic message in rhyme in order to turn the kids into great european citizens. Rich in symbolic meanings, the rhyme is a valuable ways of talking to children about Europe. The “European Befana” represents an opportunity to foster citizens’ awareness along the way to European integration and let people reflect on European Union values.
